Runar - Let us out please?

Mid Autumn mix media collage piece.

Runar is a thematic artwork inspired by the Mid Autumn Festival. The name Runar is a fusion of 'rabbit and 'lunar'. The inception of this artwork can be traced back to a personal emotional experience during a trip to China, where I observed the widespread trade and consumption of rabbit meat. Remarkably, rabbit meat was as prevalent as chicken meat at various marketplaces, with prices averaging around 13 yuan per rabbit. This culinary preference is rooted in the Chinese tradition of showcasing affluence by presenting a diverse array of meats during feasts. Consequently, it has evolved into a longstanding cultural ritual for the Chinese to indulge in various rare species.

The primary objective of this artwork is to convey a crucial message - the superfluous nature of consuming rabbit meat, as well as other endangered species, in our daily diets. It serves as a poignant reminder that we possess an abundance of food resources beyond our conventional beliefs, eliminating the need to resort to the consumption of rare and endangered species. This artistic creation encourages us to recognise and appreciate the ample variety of sustenance available to us, thus advocating for more sustainable and responsible dietary choices.
